For many people, the notion of romance conjures up glittery images, where guy meets girl in a quirky café, opening the door to fantasy only possible in dreams or Hollywood movies. Even the most ardent of sci-fi fans probably don't envisage a neuroscientist having any part to play in their matchmaking. And yet, today, science and technology form the bedrock on which love and attraction thrive.
The Atlantic reports that 93 out of 1,000 couples who met in 2018 found each other through dating apps, like Bumble, Grindr, Hinge, and Tinder. This last one has been the game-changer.
While it was not the first app of its kind, Tinder revolutionized the industry, and with it, the entire concept of dating. Today, the impact of its disruption is rippling across younger generations, influencing society in ways nobody could have predicted. But is it for better or worse?
